The Exclusion Room

The Exclusion Room

From 2017–18 Alessandra Sormani worked as a part-time art technician in an all-boys Roman Catholic state school in London. By accumulating findings from the art department dating back to the 1950s, she has started an archive specific to the art department: looking at how the curriculum changed over the years in both teaching and learning, access to materials, tools and technology.

As the first phase of her research, Alessandra Sormani represented pupils in the performance Exclusion Room. People wrote their own choice of words at the top of a piece of paper, which she then wrote repeatedly until she had filled both sides of the page.
